The draw is out for ITALIAN OPEN 2018

You will not believe, but … Thiem is again in the same quarter with Rafa and Djoker.

Here is the draw

Dominic’s potential path:

Analyzing alternate draw possibilities on the Masters tournament level, not a bad draw for Dominic. Given he was able to beat Rafa in Rome 2017 (Rafe being in top form then) and now in Madrid, we should not see Rafa as an ultimate obstacle anymore.  Monfils/Fognini and Mannarino/Querrey are also not ultimate obstacles.

So the way to semi looks like in Madrid.

Dimitrov/Nishikori/Djokovic/Isner in semi – well you cannot expect easy opponents at this level but still no Angstgegner (has Dominic still Angstgegners??? – we could doubt after his dominant win over Anderson yesterday). And who comes in the final, is not that important, everyone reaching the final, will be a tough opponent.

Maybe Dominic is emotionally (not mentally) stronger than before but we still don’t know, how it goes, when he has to play one big name after other, so maybe Djokovic in the final would be some “emotional threat”, but I don’t see Djokovic being back at his best and probably cannot reach the final.

Of course I know and you all know, what are such draw analyzes worth. Every player have every day a better or worse day in the office, for some reason and there are many.

The ATP Tour is IMO just in very unstable state. Old champions still win candidates but no more dominating the field. Still larger group of NextGen ready for some upsets but probably not yet for winning big titles.  But what’s your consolation if you just got upset? And there is a smaller group of those who are close to the top since some years. Potentially first contenders to replace old masters.

But look on outcomes of this year’s tournaments. Many seeds falling early but in the finals still either some of old masters or some of those quite experienced top contenders. Dominic belongs to this group for sure. Maybe his prime time is coming. Imagine how could this year look like for Dominic, if not the virus and injury? Let’s hope, he stays healthy and then  …

Dominic plays tomorrow (second match on court 3, with first match starting at 11.00 CEST) doubles, teamed up with Steve Johnson and the opponents are … Zverev brothers.

Don’t know yet, if the match will be streamed.  If yes, I will record the match and post the link here.

One of these two gentlemen will be Dominic’s first opponent

Today’s doubles will be streamed on TennisTV and 1-2 hours after the match you will find here the link to the match record.  Couldn’t find any free live stream.

Kiki  plays her first round match today as a third match on NEXT GEN ARENA, so it’s after Dominic’s doubles and maybe Dominic will cheer for her in her player’s box.

Rain delay in Rome. At least 2 hours. Now courts being prepared to continue. But still thunderstorms in the forecast for afternoon.

Courts on Foro Italico are maybe the most beautiful worldwide, but no roofs and tournament is 100% weather-dependent.  Anyway – could you imagine retractable roofs on Foro Italico???

Not yet the end of Dominic’s Rome story. He plays tomorrow doubles together with Steve Johnson (also lost his first round singles match) against  second seeded pair Marach/Pavic. Well, actually no chance to win, but who knows?

New men’s doubles stars are born 😉

Big fight from Dominic and Steve against the actually second doubles team in the world!!! 6:0 in first set, second lost but then epic tie-breaker. They deserved to win but well, no experience in doubles so far. Maybe some day in far future?
